We are proud to offer a handle that is the same high quality as what we use for our own LH axes, and nothing less. Hoffman handles are made exclusively out of cabinet grade hickory and ash lumber in-house at Hoffman Blacksmithing. The lumber is carefully hand selected by myself or someone on our team to ensure there are no knots, bark inclusions, twisted grain, or excessive grain runout. These handles are elegantly and ergonomically sculpted with generous palm swells. On top of this your handle will come with 1 walnut wedge and a light coat of boiled linseed oil to help preserve it during transportation.
There is much debate on grain orientation amongst the axe community, and we take this very seriously as we fully intend to offer the premium of premium handles on the market. At Hoffman Blacksmithing all handles that are 19” or longer will come with straight parallel-grained handles. For handles shorter than 19” we use all parts of the lumber that do not have knots, bark inclusions, twisted grain, or excessive grain runout. After thorough testing we have concluded that a shorter handled axe does not impart enough force for parallel grain to be advantageous in handle performance.
We offer most handles in both hickory and ash. Hickory is the most popular option, since it is more dense than ash and has a higher flexibility threshold. However, ash isn’t far behind and offers better performance in extreme cold temperatures. Hickory can become brittle and snap If you wish to frequently use your axe in temperatures below 5-10 degrees fahrenheit.
