"Simplicity is the ultimate sophistication." - Leonardo Da Vinci
I stropped my axe briefly after chopping wood for about an hour. I still could have shaved with it, even before stropping. Liam’s workmanship is unreal.
This hand forged camp hatchet stands out as an exceptionally crafted tool. Liam Hoffman’s design for this small axe is both efficient and beautiful: the hand formed haft is comfortable either held near the fawn-foot style end for chopping, or choked up toward the lug for closer work with the blade. It is sublimely weighted and is capable of medium strength lateral chopping, as well as feathering a fire-stick with its super sharp blade edge. The real genius, however, is in Liam’s interpretation of the shape of the axe head, and the particular finish he creates. Each mark speaks of his hammer, while shaping the head, and each axe head will be unique in that regard. The mirror polished finish on the edge of the blade is in contrast to the hand hammered finish on the rest of the head. The quality of the belt sheath is superb. It is a joy to own and use this extraordinary tool.
I just received mine today. It is precisely aligned and symmetric, sharpened perfectly, and simply magnificent. Makes my GB, Wetterlings and Council velvicuts look amateur. Carved a birch spoon blank in ten minutes as soon as I held it. I am so stunned on the quality I am thinking about selling all my axes to simplify to the magic of Liam’s tools. I have never written a review before. The price of admission is worth it. Dang I wish I’d found his forge site a long time ago!
He is exemplifying the work of the bladesmith.
When I first purchased this axe I wondered how it would compare with my very capable GB Wildlife Hatchet. I was amazed at the product from the moment I opened the box. The details including, but not limited to a walnut wedge, perfectly executed chamfered lanyard hole, dressing both ends of the perfectly straight grained handle with a smooth bevel, the dressing of the poll and the amazing quality of the sheath jump right out at you. The cutting edge out of the box was also as sharp as any knife I’ve ever purchased. Once I got home I did a 2 hour side by side comparison with the GB with astonishing results. When striking with either the edge or poll side of the axe, the contoured handle always puts the head angle in a perfect “handshake” position upon impact giving maximum control and accuracy and zero vibration. While the edge geometry is a little larger than the GB I found the LH to be a much better slicer as well. Partly in part to the perfectly executed grind and secondly to the attention paid to sharpening the tool. I then hammered multiple stakes I made from wood and even larger steel anchor spikes and the poll drove them home like using a 1.5 lb hammer. After finishing, I ran the poll end over a strop and the satin finish came right back. the edge could still shave arm hair after testing. The GB website says DO NOT strike your poll on metal, not an issue with the LH products. Overall, I love this axe and plan to have many more in the future. This is a product that you 150% get what you paid for and then some. I also like the fact that Liam controls every aspect of the build and each axe and knife of his is 100% American.
Liam does excellent work! I actually have six items he has made or is making for me. He is very accommodating and will take the time to make exactly what you want. He will insure by confirmation with you each step along the way to make sure you will be completely satisfied. Do not let his young age fool you, he has a mindful of years in experience and great talent. His professional demeanor is top-notch. You will be pleasantly pleased with his work! I know I am. The edges are far superior than any axe I have ever handled and owned. The leather masks are of great quality too! I am very happy! These axes are far superior to anything I have ever owned, inclusive of my Gransfors Bruk axes! I am looking forward to putting them to use! I look forward to my other projects for his undertaking coming in the near future.
WE SAY IT ALL THE TIME, AMAZING, SPECTACULAR, FINEST WE HAVE SEEN, BEST WE HAVE HANDLED AND SO ON. HOWEVER THIS IS ONE PRODUCT WE HAVE USED EXTENSIVELY OVER THE WINTER IN OUR SHOP SPLITTING WOOD AND TO ME PERSONALLY THERE IS NO FINER AXE MADE, PERIOD! WE HAVE SPLIT OVER 2 FACE CORDS OF WOOD WITH THE 2.25LB CAMP AXE, TOUCHED IT UP WITH A GREEN SIDED STROP A FEW TIMES AND IT SLICED PAPER LIKE THE SHARPEST KNIFE YOU CARRY, AMAZING TO ME! WE SPLIT FINER PIECES ALL WINTER WITH THE BEARDED AXE WITH THE SAME RESULTS, LIKE CUTTING THROUGH BUTTER. WE HAVE ALSO USED THE HAMMER SIDE (POLL) OF THESE AXES THIS WINTER CUTTING DOWN A 1 1/2’ WIDE DEAD ASH THAT WAS HARD AS A ROCK. WE HAD TO USE WEDGES WITH THE LEAN OF THE TREE IN THE DIRECTION OF ONE OF OUR BUILDINGS, SO TO DRIVE IN THESE WEDGES WE USED AGAIN THE POLL END OF THE 2.25LB CAMP AXE WITH 19” HANDLE AND USING 3 WEDGES HAMMERED THEM IN ABOUT AS HARD AS I COULD SWING A GOOD 70-75 TIMES. AFTER TREE WAS DROPPED THE POLL END LOOKED LIKE IT HAD NEVER BEEN USED, THE ASH HANDLE WAS NOT LOOSENED IN THE SLIGHTEST! THESE ARE BUILD TO BE USED AND USED HARD. EVERYTHING ABOUT THEM FOR ME IS PERFECT, THANKS SO MUCH LIAM HOFFMAN!
I have had the privilege of frequent visits to Liam’s shop over the last two years and am constantly blown away by the supreme quality of his work. Liam’s creativity is focused by a vast knowledge and driven by steady passion. Recently he crafted for me a camp knife with copper accents and a beautiful mahogany handle. With an eight-inch blade, the knife is rarely challenged by anything. My camp knife is a complete blast to use and I can’t help cracking a smile when it swipes through saplings in just one blow. I have even made quick work of small trees when preparing firewood with this knife. Its sheer utility value is awesome but even more so is its fine craftsmanship. I was able to see this knife in nearly every stage of production. Holding the finished product and using it in the outdoors is extremely satisfying. I am positive that my Hoffman knife will still be in use long after I am gone and am hopeful that it will remain in my family for generations.
I don’t think my husband could be any happier than he was with his anniversary gift. He was so surprised and in awe of the craftsmanship. He and our son have visited the website and watched the videos over and over. We try to give each other anniversary gifts that can be passed on or have a special meaning when possible. This was the perfect gift. Thanks so much for working with my time frame.
I bought a ‘one-off’ axe from Liam. I was very surprised with how well not only the axe head was made, but the handle also. The handle design is so smooth and fits the hand perfect. The look and feel of a truly hand made axe is bar none. I have been cutting trees down with everything from a hatchet to a stroked out Stihl 880 for most of my life. This axe is so enjoyable and easy to use. It has become a permanent addition to my camp pack and woods walk gear.
After a couple years of using hardware store hammers for my bladesmithing I decided to pull the trigger on a high quality rounding hammer. I was hesitant to spend too much money on hammer; I wasn’t sure how much difference it would really make. I saw the difference in my work within minutes of using Liam’s #2.75 rounding hammer. It moved material faster, more accurately and with less energy. The rebound was absolutely astonishing. Liam’s hammer hit harder than any hammer I had ever used.
I work at a smaller department where each fire fighter has to carry a tool on him. Having a custom axe built to Liam’s quality made for the best fire I could ask for. I’ve used this axe from structure fires to car fires with making access under the hood to cutting out a wind shield of a semi rollover. The axe was ready for work. Since I’ve carried this axe I’ve used it on 2 fires and it has performed nothing less than perfect. It’s an extension of my right arm. If I need to cut, rip, or just plain smash it’s ready. I take it back to the station wipe it off, oil it up and put it away. Ready for it’s next job. Thank you Liam for making such great axes.
I received my first Hoffman axe (3lb camp axe) a couple weeks ago, and it is better than I expected with great customer service and follow up communication. I already placed another order for a carving axe.
I received a Hoffman Blacksmithing 6 inch chef’s knife as a birthday gift.I have worked in food service for over 20 years. This is the best handling, best balanced, sharpest knife I have ever owned.I highly recommend Liam Hoffman’s knives to anyone looking for professional knives.(Make sure you wear a cutting glove!)
I have been forging and making knives and axes for many years. In the area of knife making I have trained with many Master Smiths in the ABS at the blade school and also at many hammer -in’s. I become a Journeyman Smith in 2003 and have not moved on from there yet. But as far as axes go I’ve not had any formal training in that area. Enter Liam Hoffman, www.hoffmanblacksmithing.com. I had saw his axes off and on for a year or so before I knew who was making them and finally found out who it was that was making these great axes. I was very surprised that he is so young and so knowledgeable about axes ( age 19 ) and he is very particular in every part of the making of his axes. Any way I got hold of him and took a class this weekend from him. I must say he is by all means an excellent teacher. If you have no experience at all he will help you all you need or if you are experienced he will guide you by forging a axe while you forge one with him also. WE each forged a Viking Bearded axe and finished them completely to a very nice straight grain ash handle. I had a fantastic time and feel I have made a very good friend. Thanks Liam for everything.
High quality craftsmanship from a top notch guy.
The custom knife I had Hoffman Blacksmithing make for me has turned out to be one of my favorite working knives that I own. After skinning a half dozen beavers, a deer, 3 sheep, and a truck load of muskrats I could still shave with it! Top notch work! I have payed a lot more money and received a whole lot less for knives. From now on all my cutlery needs will be filled by Liam!
I got a chance to take this out in the woods today to test. It worked really well, cutting power was right in-between my GB Small Forest Axe and my Council Velvicut Hudson-Bay pattern. The combination of the heavy head and the shorter haft allows considerable power while making it easy to stow/carry. I just tucked it into my belt and didn’t notice it, but it beavered right through a sizeable fir tree.Fit and finish were great, and it was properly sharpened/profiled out of the box. Great tool.
I took an Awesome class taught by Liam Hoffman this weekend, he really knows his stuff and is a BEAST, with his tutoring I was able to turn out My first axe. Thanks again man
First time I saw Liam’s saddle axe I was blown away. The craftsmanship and level of skill this young man has shows experience beyond his years. His tools are functional art.
Liam.............absolutely stunning! I’m having an 18” handle placed on your fabulous work then it will go into its place in the exhibit. Thanks so much again!
I’ve been using my ball pein hammer in the shop lately for various knifemaking tasks and I love it! It is the perfect size for using with a center punch, peening pins and anywhere you need a small shop hammer. The polished round face is perfect for texturing bolsters, pommels and guards. Thanks for the awesome hammer Liam! I highly recommend it to anyone wanting an awesome handmade hammer!
I purchased the sharp bearded mini axe. I received it and was completely satisfied and thrilled. I have purchased other “mini axes” before from other companies, and they were not up to this standard. This is a real mini axe, it’s sharp. Its made just as a large axe is!..I use mine to cut cheeses.. I have even attached a leather lanyard to mine with a wood bead and it’s part of my everyday carry. I highly recommend this little guy!
I first saw Liam’s amazing blacksmithing talent on Facebook. From there I saw he made rings out of Mokume Gane “Japanese Damascus” and ordered a set for my wife and me. They are beautiful, unique, well designed, and perfectly sized. As a hobbyist blacksmith, I can tell you he is truly a professional and an artist!
Very unique piece and fantastic workmanship. Also very nice contact and good tips for blade care. Strongly recommended. Bows and regards from Berlin.
Awesome razor. Shaves like crazy. Very very well made. Feels rugged and solid. It was shipped very fast and the seller included a personalized note regarding care and usage. I highly recommend this shop.
I’ve just started getting into cold forging silver and wanted a nice hand made hammer. Yours is perfect for me heavy enough but not to heavy. Thank you.
As always Liam takes his craft to a new level. amazing work. every thing he makes is a work of art!
Amazing quality and craftsmanship. This is quite possibly the last rounding hammer I’ll ever need to buy! So well made, thanks over and over Mr. Hoffman!
Great design and choice of materials, fantastic quality!
Liam was fantastic. He was super responsive, extremely creative in working with me on a custom project, and most importantly, crafted a beautiful, well-made axe that was given to my best friend on his wedding day. I highly recommend working with Liam.
